Millions of individuals who own pets will soon have the opportunity to voice their concerns to a veterinary ombudsman, as per new propositions revealed today. The Government is contemplating the establishment of an independent regulator to offer pet owners a clear pathway for recourse when issues with their veterinary practice remain unresolved. A recent White Paper has also detailed plans for the statutory regulation of vets, including inspections and the publication of compliance reports. Described as the most significant overhaul of veterinary regulation in six decades, these proposals aim to enhance accountability and transparency within the industry.
Following the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) introducing reforms earlier this year to enhance cost transparency for pet owners, the same reforms have been incorporated into the White Paper. The CMA suggested capping prescription fees at £21, requiring vets to disclose prices for common treatments, and introducing a price comparison platform. Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Secretary Emma Reynolds emphasized the importance of these reforms in alleviating financial concerns for pet owners and ensuring they receive the best value for their pets’ care.
UK chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss highlighted the necessity for updating legislation to align with the evolving veterinary profession’s needs. The proposed framework aims to strengthen the profession’s resilience and uphold high standards of animal care in the UK. CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell expressed support for the government’s proposals, emphasizing the importance of accountability and consumer protection within the veterinary sector.
