A man from the UK who has joined forces with Russian troops under Vladimir Putin’s command in the conflict with Ukraine has spoken out about his actions. Ben Stimson, a former antiques dealer from Oldham, defended his decision to fight for Russia in 2024. Stimson had previously served time in prison for participating in a pro-Moscow militia in Ukraine’s Donbas region in 2014.
In an interview with a Sky News correspondent in Moscow, Stimson expressed his connection to the ethnic Russian population in Donbas and his desire to protect them. He emphasized that while he may be considered a traitor by the British government, he does not see himself as betraying the British people without an official declaration of war between the UK and Russia.
Stimson disclosed details of his service in the Russian military, transitioning from an engineer to an instructor for English-speaking recruits. He hinted at the presence of more British individuals in the Russian military than commonly perceived. Despite acknowledging the controversial nature of his involvement, Stimson maintained his belief in the righteousness of his actions.
He confirmed his contract with the Russian military, clarifying that he served for over a year but not in a frontline capacity. Stimson, who now holds Russian citizenship, faces potential arrest if he returns to the UK due to legal implications related to joining the Russian army.
Reflecting on his past involvement in Ukraine and his current allegiance to Russia, Stimson expressed a sense of commitment to his decisions, even in the face of strained family relationships and threats. He emphasized his dedication to his principles and beliefs, prioritizing his actions in defense of the people he supported in the conflict zone.
Stimson’s journey from Oldham to the Donbas region was influenced by his background and historical solidarity between working-class communities. Despite the challenges he now faces, he remains resolute in his convictions, accepting the consequences of his choices and expressing a readiness to embrace his new life in Russia.
