Four Migrants Die Crossing English Channel

Date:

Two men and two women lost their lives while trying to cross the English Channel in a small boat. The head of the Pas-de-Calais region, Francois-Xavier Lauch, mentioned that the four migrants were discovered far from the coast. French authorities rescued 42 individuals, with one treated for hypothermia and 37 taken to the hospital.

The tragic incident occurred as the migrants were attempting to board a dinghy near Equihen-Plage. Mr. Lauch praised the efforts of officers and firefighters who work daily to prevent such risky crossings. The victims, two men, and two women, were swept away by dangerous currents as they ventured far into the sea.

Apart from the casualties, one person suffered from hypothermia, while emergency services are attending to the remaining 37 survivors. French authorities are closely monitoring several dinghies at sea, with support from a military helicopter. The responsibility for these incidents lies with human smugglers, as stated by Mr. Lauch.

Government officials expressed deep sorrow over the deaths in French waters and emphasized the need to combat criminal groups exploiting vulnerable individuals. Care4Calais’s Charlotte Khan criticized the lack of safe routes for refugees, attributing the deaths to ineffective deterrence measures.

Imran Hussain from the Refugee Council urged the government to provide secure pathways for migrants to reach the UK. The recent fatalities underscore the perilous nature of crossing the Channel, with incidents of migrants facing various challenges during their journeys. Despite a decrease in arrivals via small boats compared to the previous year, the issue remains a pressing concern for authorities.
