“US Warns of Russian Military ‘Provocation’ Against Poland”

Date:

The United States has issued a warning that Russia is preparing a potential military “provocation” against Poland to test the strength of NATO, as per reports. Washington has allegedly informed Warsaw that this provocation could involve targeting Polish critical infrastructure with missiles and drones, or in a more extreme scenario, Russian troops crossing into NATO territory.

Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki conveyed that the US mentioned the planned “provocation” could occur in the coming months with the aim of escalating tensions and disrupting Western military and financial aid to Ukraine. Last month, allied nations collectively pledged $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.

According to a source linked to Mr. Nawrocki, the US regularly shares information about new Russian plans for a conventional attack on NATO’s eastern flank, including potential threats to Poland. Security sources outlined scenarios that could include drone attacks on critical infrastructure or simulated air strikes. The most extreme scenario discussed involved a “hybrid attack in the border region” by Russian or Belarusian forces.

It has been suggested that Russia might present any resulting incident as a mistake, possibly due to a GPS malfunction causing troops to inadvertently enter Polish territory. Polish sources indicated that Russia may anticipate pressuring Poland through US intermediation to negotiate with Russia or Belarus, potentially leading to a demand for halting Western support to Ukraine in exchange for a withdrawal from Polish soil.

An ambassador to a NATO ally of Poland and a member of the Polish defense ministry also highlighted the significant risk of a provocation in Poland or one of the Baltic states. A Baltic security source indicated that discussions on such plans were ongoing in Moscow, with potential attack launch sites being either Kaliningrad or Belarus.

Recent findings by the International Institute of Strategic Studies revealed probable Russian utilization of shadow ships to deploy drones over Europe, monitoring military installations and testing NATO nations’ air defenses. The report documented 144 suspected drone sightings across Europe, with sightings peaking in late 2025, temporarily impacting airport operations in several European countries.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the drone incidents in Denmark as the most severe attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.
