“French Woman and Children Rescued from Decade-Long Captivity in Pakistan”

Date:

Police authorities in Pakistan have apprehended a man accused of imprisoning his wife and children in their residence and subjecting them to abuse for over ten years. The rescued individuals, Sylvie Yasmina, a 54-year-old French citizen, and her five children, were found in a deteriorated state at a mud-brick home in Bara, a secluded town in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The district police chief, Waqar Ahmad, confirmed the arrest of Ms. Yasmina’s husband, Ahmad Khan. Upon discovery, Ms. Yasmina and her children displayed visible signs of physical trauma. Ms. Yasmina disclosed that her husband had inflicted both physical and mental abuse on her, characterizing him as extremely violent.

Allegations emerged that Ms. Yasmina was prohibited from interacting with others, leading to educational neglect for her children. A senior police official revealed that the older children had missed their schooling, while the younger ones had never been enrolled in any educational institution.

Following a brave escape by one of her sons to seek help from the local police, Ms. Yasmina and her children were relocated to a women’s shelter in Peshawar for safety. Plans are in motion for Ms. Yasmina to return to France, with authorities coordinating efforts with relevant officials and the French embassy for her repatriation.

In her testimony, Ms. Yasmina expressed a sense of confinement since relocating from Australia to Pakistan in 2014. A video recording released by the police captured Ms. Yasmina expressing gratitude for her rescue and her desire to go back to France.

Shabina Ayaz, the director of the Aurat Foundation, strongly condemned the reported mistreatment of Ms. Yasmina, urging for comprehensive support from the French embassy and Pakistani authorities for the family. The incident serves as a poignant reminder for both authorities and society to address such cases promptly.

Human rights organizations highlight that numerous women in Pakistan face physical and mental abuse from their spouses and relatives annually, with many instances going unreported.
