Funeral directors jailed for bodies left to decompose

Date:

Two funeral directors have been sentenced to jail for neglecting bodies at their funeral home, allowing them to decompose in an unrefrigerated room. Richard Elkin and Hayley Bell, who operated Elkin and Bell Funerals in Hampshire, were found guilty of several charges, including causing a public nuisance and defrauding creditors. The court heard that the body of 87-year-old William Mitchell was found in an advanced state of decomposition after being stored for 36 days without proper care.

High Court enforcement agents discovered the bodies of two elderly men at the funeral home while repossessing the premises due to outstanding debts. The room where the bodies were stored was not refrigerated, leading to decomposition. Elkin and Bell were aware of their financial difficulties but continued to provide funeral services, resulting in multiple cases of badly decomposed bodies found at their facility.

The court also heard testimonies from family members of deceased individuals entrusted to Elkin and Bell, expressing shock and distress over the mishandling of their loved ones’ remains. The families recounted feelings of betrayal and abandonment during their most vulnerable moments, highlighting the emotional impact of the funeral directors’ actions.

Authorities emphasized the serious harm caused by Elkin and Bell’s negligence, stressing the need to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future. The case has sparked outrage and calls for greater accountability in the funeral industry to ensure the proper care and dignity of the deceased.
