Residents of Santorini, a picturesque Greek island known for its stunning blue skies, found themselves facing a rare challenge as a Saharan storm swept through the region, turning the skies a menacing red hue. The locals were compelled to don face masks while outdoors to shield themselves from the thick dust brought by the unusual weather event, which is the latest in a series of storms impacting the Aegean area.
Health experts issued warnings about the potential respiratory risks posed by the elevated levels of airborne particles. The iconic white-domed churches of Santorini took on an otherworldly appearance as they were enveloped in the eerie dust cloud originating from North Africa, approximately 2,300 miles away. The storm’s effects caused disruption for the island’s permanent population of 15,500 residents and the millions of tourists who visit annually.
In response to the storm, incoming flights were redirected to alternate destinations such as Crete, Athens, and Corfu, with flights from Manchester to Rhodes also being rerouted. The travel disruptions were attributed to climate change, which has been increasingly impacting global travel patterns.
The region was further battered by Storm Erminio, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that led to mud coating vehicles and buildings in Crete. A red weather warning was issued for the area, further complicating travel plans for those heading to and from Greece and its surrounding islands ahead of the upcoming Easter holidays. Tragically, a man lost his life in the Nea Makri area near Athens due to flooding caused by the storm.
Authorities in Libya also declared a state of emergency in Tobruk as a dust storm descended on the region, turning the skies a similar shade of red. The series of severe weather events in the Mediterranean have underscored the urgent need for preparedness and adaptation in the face of changing climate patterns.
