A violent altercation at a funeral wake left a truck driver with a severe facial injury that required nine stitches. The incident occurred when a father and his two sons engaged in a brawl at the event, throwing pint glasses and causing chaos among mourners.
The family, known as the Redmonds from Holm Lane in Prenton, Wirral, attended the wake at Prenton Golf Club following a funeral. Witnesses noted that the trio, despite their unfamiliarity with the attendees, appeared inappropriately dressed for the occasion.
During the wake, a confrontation erupted, leading to physical violence. The situation escalated when the Redmond family members were escorted out but continued to engage in aggressive behavior. The brawl intensified as one of the sons threw a pint glass, injuring a staff member.
Eyewitnesses reported disturbing acts of violence, including one of the sons gouging at a man’s eyes. The chaos resulted in injuries to multiple individuals, with one victim requiring nine stitches for a split nose. The truck driver involved also suffered from glass fragments in his eye, impacting his ability to work and socialize.
The court heard that the father, Liam Redmond snr, had a history of violent offenses, including a previous conviction for attempted wounding. Despite this, his defense highlighted his health issues and financial struggles. The sons, Liam Redmond jnr and Luke Redmond, had no prior convictions but admitted to their involvement in the affray.
As a result of their actions, the Redmond family faced legal consequences. Liam Redmond snr received a suspended prison sentence, while the sons were given community orders. Additionally, they were ordered to compensate one of the victims for the harm caused during the brawl.
Judge Garrett Byrne condemned the family’s behavior, emphasizing the disgraceful nature of the incident and the impact it had on the victims. Despite showing remorse and compliance with previous legal obligations, the Redmonds were held accountable for their violent actions at the wake.
