A furious builder in North London has vehemently refuted claims linking him to the renowned street artist Banksy. George Georgiou, who was initially suspected of being Banksy when seen installing protective coverings around one of Banksy’s artworks near Finsbury Park, London, in March 2024, has denied any association with the elusive artist.
Despite recent reports by Reuters identifying Banksy as Robin Gunningham from Bristol, images of Georgiou from 2024 have resurfaced. Dismissing the speculations, the incensed builder expressed his frustration with the ongoing rumors, labeling the Banksy allegations as “annoying.”
In a statement to the Daily Mail, Georgiou firmly stated, “I’m not Banksy… It’s really annoying, it’s ridiculous and it’s disturbing.” He emphasized that the initial amusement over the mistaken identity has now become wearisome.
Addressing those who accused him of being Banksy, Georgiou urged them to “grow up” and stated that the real Banksy would not be engaged in manual work like installing protective materials. He humorously mentioned his Greek heritage but highlighted his London upbringing, joking that he wished he were the famous artist but now just wants the speculation to cease as it disrupts his daily routine.
Recent revelations by Reuters also suggested that Banksy, allegedly operating under the alias David Jones, may have collaborated with a “famous painting partner” for his artistic endeavors. Banksy’s anonymity has contributed to the high value of his works, fetching thousands or even millions of dollars.
Investigations by a team of journalists uncovered sealed U.S. documents and police files attempting to unveil Banksy’s identity. Witness accounts of Banksy entering Ukraine in 2022 to create art pieces further fueled the mystery surrounding the elusive artist.
Reports from locals indicated that a man named Dave Jones, along with photographer Giles Duley, ventured into Ukraine on October 28, 2022, possibly for artistic pursuits.
