A widespread power outage has plunged Georgia into darkness, affecting key areas including the capital city of Tbilisi. Residents in Tbilisi, Rustavi, Batumi, and other major cities experienced power cuts shortly after midnight local time. The extent of the disruption is not fully known as Georgian authorities have not issued a statement, but local media have referenced the country’s electricity operator, Electrosystem.
The state-owned company responsible for managing the electricity transmission system disclosed that the outage resulted from the disconnection of a power line connecting the Georgian and Turkish electricity grids. Consequently, many parts of the country are facing limited power supply, with reports even indicating that the iconic Tbilisi TV Tower is without power.
Concerned citizens took to social media platforms, with one Reddit user sharing observations of a city-wide blackout from their balcony. Another user mentioned that the power outage was widespread, affecting even the Andza radio tower. The TV broadcasting tower, a notable local landmark standing at 277.5 meters tall on Mtatsminda Mountain in Tbilisi, also lost power.
