A man in Germany took two individuals hostage and covered himself in gasoline at a town hall in Lengerich. The incident unfolded as the man, identified as a 47-year-old Romanian national, entered the building and barricaded himself with two staff members. He proceeded to pour a flammable liquid on himself and brandish a lighter.
Law enforcement swiftly responded by evacuating the area and launching a significant operation that involved closing multiple streets. Specialized police units successfully subdued the suspect, leading to the safe release of the hostages without harm on Tuesday afternoon.
Following the encounter, the perpetrator, who sustained minor injuries from the flammable liquid, received medical attention. The Polizei Münster, the local police force, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. The town hall and surrounding streets were cordoned off to ensure public safety during the operation. Firefighters and police provided assistance, and the road closures have since been lifted.
