Andy Burnham may encounter obstacles in his bid for the position of Prime Minister as Labour MPs deliberate over supporting potential rivals. Some lawmakers have encouraged Chief Secretary to the PM, Darren Jones, to consider entering the competition due to concerns about Burnham’s potential uncontested appointment. However, the likelihood of Jones standing seemed to diminish as a source close to him downplayed the idea.
Former defense minister Al Carns also hinted at contemplating a run for the top position. When asked about his potential leadership bid, Carns mentioned that his decision would depend on various factors, including aligning with a particular vision and policy.
There are doubts regarding whether either candidate could secure the support of the necessary 81 MPs to participate in a leadership contest. Burnham reportedly enjoys the backing of a majority of Labour MPs and would likely be a frontrunner if a contest were initiated.
If uncontested, Burnham could assume the role of Prime Minister in a matter of weeks. The window for nominations to replace Keir Starmer opens on July 9 and closes on July 16, potentially paving the way for Burnham to become PM the following day if no challenger emerges.
Several Cabinet Ministers have expressed reluctance towards a challenging contest. Nick Thomas-Symonds, a supporter of Starmer, endorsed Burnham and advocated for a swift transfer of power. Similarly, Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds voiced opposition to a contest, throwing her support behind Burnham due to his perceived numerical advantage.
However, backbencher Nadia Whittome emphasized the need to scrutinize Burnham’s ideas and address pressing national issues such as the cost of living crisis and public service challenges. She stressed the importance of transparently evaluating candidates’ proposals through member and union scrutiny.
Labour MP John Slinger argued in favor of a comprehensive leadership contest to subject aspiring leaders to normal scrutiny, emphasizing the public’s expectation of a rigorous selection process for individuals vying for the highest office.
Reflecting mixed opinions within the party, an MP representing a Red Wall constituency expressed skepticism regarding Jones’ candidacy while highlighting the need for Burnham to maintain a strong position. The MP also hinted at the potential emergence of a challenger aligned with the Starmer faction if circumstances evolve.
