After nearly a year and a half, a massive sinkhole that disrupted a high street in Surrey has finally been repaired and filled. The incident, which occurred on February 17, 2025, led to the evacuation of around 30 homes and the closure of businesses along Godstone High Street.
The lengthy repair process involved stabilizing a complex network of Victorian mining tunnels beneath the street using approximately 1,100 tonnes of grout. The unexpected discovery of a 19th-century mine system further complicated the reconstruction efforts, leading to additional delays.
Local residents, relieved to see the road reopen, expressed their joy at the restoration of normalcy. The project also included the replacement of damaged water pipes and the reconstruction of roads and pavements in the area. Matt Furniss of the Surrey County Council commended the community for their patience during the challenging repair work.
SES Water finalized the restoration by replacing damaged water mains before the reopening of Godstone High Street. The project involved extensive ground assessments, installation of new water mains, and thorough testing to ensure the safety and functionality of the network.
Residents, businesses, and commuters were appreciative of the completed work, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the prolonged closure. Despite the challenges faced, the community expressed gratitude for the efforts to restore the affected area to a safe and stable condition.
