“Government Plans Tariff Cuts on Basic Necessities”

Date:

Baked beans, bananas, and olive oil are set to become more affordable, thanks to proposed Government tariff reductions. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is committed to lowering prices on everyday essential items amid escalating costs due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The government has released a list of more than 100 basic necessities that will see targeted tariff reductions, along with an update to mileage rates for the first time in 15 years. The list includes a variety of items such as fresh produce, oils, baked goods, chocolates, sauces, and soft drinks. A consultation period will run until June 24, with no specific timeline for the implementation of the changes.

Speaking on the matter, Ms. Reeves emphasized the importance of mitigating the impact of external conflicts on households and businesses by freezing fuel duty, adjusting mileage rates, and temporarily reducing VAT to support cost savings for consumers.

The proposed tariff cuts will impact a range of products, aiming to make them more accessible and affordable for consumers.
