After the funeral services for a deceased family member, it is common for loved ones to preserve their ashes in an urn at home. This practice provides solace by keeping the memory of the departed close. Following the passing of Dorothy Kuspis, aged 98, her granddaughter, Ashleigh Wegner, opted to store her ashes in an urn. Ashleigh, along with her mother and uncles, selected a heart-shaped keepsake urn labeled for “Nanny” and purchased it through Amazon.
Upon receiving the urn, Ashleigh noticed that it appeared to have been stored for a considerable period as it was slightly dusty. However, upon closer inspection, she made a disturbing discovery. The urn, advertised as new, still contained remnants from a previous use.
Feeling shocked and uneasy, Ashleigh contacted both Amazon and the third-party seller responsible for the urn. She expressed her concern beyond just returning the item, fearing that it might be resold without proper disclosure of its history.
Amazon promptly responded, assuring Ashleigh of a refund. Although awaiting a response from the seller, she received a replacement urn in a timely manner. The new urn now securely holds the remains of Ashleigh’s grandmother, with a small portion of the ashes set aside for close family members.
Reflecting on the situation, Ashleigh shared that while the incident was unexpected, it served as a reminder of the transient nature of life. Interestingly, this was not the first time she had encountered unexpected ashes. In a previous incident, she and her husband stumbled upon a box of ashes abandoned in their neighborhood.
After reporting the discovery to the authorities, who failed to locate the original owners, Ashleigh and her husband respectfully scattered the ashes in the Arizona mountains. Similarly, they plan to handle the mystery ashes found in the urn with care to prevent them from causing distress to others.
Ashleigh emphasized the importance of responsibly handling such delicate items, ensuring they do not inadvertently reach unintended recipients. While Amazon has been contacted regarding the matter, they are yet to provide a response.
