A trial revealed that a grandfather extended assistance to his suspected assailant before being fatally attacked. Nathan Gothard, who had been drinking at a village pub in Leicestershire, was involved in a confrontation with David Darke following alleged inappropriate behavior towards women. Despite being escorted out of the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Gothard sought out a confrontation, as reported by Leicestershire Live.
The altercation, which commenced with a co-worker of Mr. Darke, resulted in Gothard being knocked down. Mr. Darke, aged 66, attempted to aid him but was knocked to the ground by a single punch, leading to his fatal injury. Prosecution lawyer Peter Joyce KC stated in Leicester Crown Court that the events unfolded when a group from a Christmas party at Best Western in Appleby Magna visited the Crown Inn before the incident occurred.
Gothard’s behavior became increasingly aggressive towards female party members during the evening, causing tension in the bar. Despite attempts by the pub staff to diffuse the situation and escort Gothard home, he instigated a fight with another individual later on. Gothard refused to leave the premises and engaged in physical altercations, culminating in the fatal encounter with Mr. Darke.
Following the attack, Gothard was taken home by his uncle and subsequently arrested. Despite his claims of self-defense, CCTV footage contradicted his version of events. The prosecution argued that Gothard’s actions were driven by a desire to save face after losing a confrontation, leading to Mr. Darke’s death. Gothard, residing in Church Street, Appleby Magna, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and manslaughter. The trial is ongoing and is anticipated to last for seven days.
