Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud father living in Toronto, shares his experience of unexpectedly entering an international whistling competition with his daughter, Sumire. Initially, dismissing it as a casual event, Shannon and Sumire quickly found themselves immersed in the world of competitive whistling after making the cut for the Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Los Angeles.
Despite their natural talent for whistling, Shannon and Sumire realized the seriousness of the competition during a coaching session with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. They were advised to hone their skills for performance, leading them to dedicated practice sessions daily.
The journey culminated in their participation in the 2023 Masters of Musical Whistling competition, where they met talented contestants from around the globe. Overcoming his ironic tendencies, Shannon embraced the experience wholeheartedly, performing alongside Sumire on stage. Sumire won silver in the kids’ category, while Shannon clinched the gold in the level one adults category.
Reflecting on the transformative experience, Shannon acknowledged the importance of shedding irony and embracing genuine passion. Winning at the competition reinforced his belief that caring deeply about something, even if it feels silly, is a valuable pursuit.
The journey from skepticism to success at the whistling competition taught Shannon a valuable lesson about authenticity and the joy of pursuing one’s passions earnestly.
