In the aftermath of a contentious meeting involving Denmark, the US, and Iceland, Greenland issues a stern warning to the American leadership, asserting its sovereignty by stating “you cannot own us.”
Following the tense diplomatic discussions, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized that the idea of the US acquiring Greenland is deemed unnecessary. He shared this sentiment after a meeting with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deliberate on the future of the Arctic island.
Rasmussen noted that there is a clear ambition from the US to “conquer” Greenland, but expressed optimism that the meeting has influenced a shift in the American stance, according to reports from the Express. He emphasized that Greenland’s stance remains firm, stating that such an acquisition is not in the island’s best interest.
Despite the frank discussions at the White House regarding Greenland, a fundamental disagreement persists, as highlighted by the Danish foreign minister. In response to the situation, Denmark announced plans to enhance its military presence in Greenland starting immediately, as declared by the country’s defense ministry just before the talks commenced in Washington DC.
In a joint news conference with Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, Rasmussen reiterated that the US acquiring the Arctic territory is not a necessity, and clarified that there is no immediate threat from Russia.
President Trump’s recent statements suggesting a swift annexation of Greenland within weeks or months have stirred concerns. Thomas Dans, Trump’s Arctic commissioner, emphasized the urgency of the situation, indicating a desire for rapid progress, bypassing regular procedures.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s energy minister Naaja Nathanielsen voiced apprehension over potential US military actions, warning that such moves could undermine the rule of law and complicate the existing global order for Western allies.
