A tragic incident unfolded as a man lost his life following the rescue mission for two crew members who fell overboard from a fishing boat. The distress call was issued by the UK-registered boat Fortitude, located 14 miles off the Northumberland coast near Newbiggin. Several emergency response teams, including the RNLI, Coastguard, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service, and Northumbria Police, quickly mobilized to aid the stranded individuals.
While one person was safely transported to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for treatment, unfortunately, another man succumbed to the situation. Authorities have notified the deceased man’s family, confirming no foul play was suspected in the incident. Northumbria Police are collaborating with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch as part of their routine procedures.
Rescuers encountered challenging conditions with waves reaching up to 4 meters high as they navigated their way to the distressed individuals in the water. Tynemouth RNLI station reported the deployment of lifeboat crews who tirelessly worked through adverse weather to assist the casualties. The Coastguard also detailed a coordinated response involving search and rescue helicopters, lifeboats, and nearby vessels responding to the distress call.
The North East Ambulance Service provided support on-site, coordinating with the RNLI teams at Blyth Harbour and arranging transportation for one patient to the hospital. The incident serves as a solemn reminder of the risks associated with maritime activities and the vital role of emergency services in such critical situations.
