Greggs enthusiasts may soon have the option to acquire sausage rolls and various pastry treats from an automated vending machine. The bakery’s executives are exploring the implementation of “unattended retail solutions,” as stated by Richard Hutton, Greggs’ chief financial officer. These solutions would encompass both automated and manual vending options.
No specific launch date or locations have been disclosed yet. This development follows the successful introduction of three smaller Greggs Bitesize shops. Greggs recently announced a 17.9% decline in statutory pre-tax profits to £167.4 million for the year ending December 27 compared to the previous year.
The profit decrease was attributed in part to a challenging market environment and unusually hot weather conditions. In 2025, Greggs added 121 net stores, expanding its total store count to 2,739 stores. The company aims to open approximately 120 more stores this year, with ambitions to surpass 3,000 UK locations in the long term.
Roisin Currie, Greggs’ CEO, expressed optimism that easing inflation pressures would lead to increased consumer spending in the coming months. She highlighted the ongoing demand for convenient on-the-go food as a key driver in the market.
Despite the positive outlook, Currie acknowledged the continued challenges faced by customers, citing tough economic conditions. Greggs reassured customers that there are no plans for further price hikes this year, after a recent increase in the price of a sausage roll to £1.35 in most stores.
Additionally, Greggs shared that The Golden Flake Tavern, its first pub selling beer located in Newcastle’s Fenwick department store, has attracted over 20,000 customers. Popular items include the Sausage Roll & Mash dish, with more than 4,000 pints of Gosforth 1939 Lager and over 1,000 Pink Jammie Fizz cocktails sold.
