“Hackers Compromise University of Nottingham Data”

Date:

Cyber security experts are cautioning about a harmful attack on the University of Nottingham that could trigger a series of consequences, urging education administrators to prepare themselves before it’s too late.

Authorities recently confirmed that students were left vulnerable due to a significant breach that may disrupt their exam grading. Hackers managed to access students’ personal and financial information at the end of May, potentially exposing their private data.

In a communication to students, Jason Carter, the university’s chief governance and risk officer, mentioned the possibility of data being compromised by a well-known cyber criminal group that has targeted various organizations before. The university took its system offline for investigation, causing disruptions in exam grading processes.

A group of cyber-criminals, believed to be the ShinyHunters, breached the Campus Solutions platform, which was only identified by staff on Tuesday.

Experts from online security firms have outlined the repercussions of the attack, expressing concerns that this might be just the beginning. Raluca Saceanu, CEO of Smarttech247 in Ireland, emphasized the importance of swift and effective responses to such threats to maintain trust and security in organizations.

Lee Sult, Chief Investigator at Binalyze, highlighted that attackers often exploit the path of least resistance and mentioned the ongoing trend of cyber attacks on educational institutions by groups like ShinyHunters.

The University of Nottingham issued an apology to affected individuals, acknowledging the cyber incident and the breach of student data. They assured that investigations are ongoing and support will be provided to those impacted.

Impacted students were advised to stay alert for any suspicious communications, particularly those requesting financial information. The university urged affected individuals to change their passwords.

The incident has been reported to Action Fraud and the Information Commissioner’s Office, and efforts are underway to provide further information as the investigation progresses. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to understand the full impact of the breach.
