Residents in the coastal village of Hythe, Hampshire, are expressing anger towards the parish council for cutting down a beloved tree, drawing comparisons to the infamous Sycamore Gap incident. The Scot Pine, a cherished fixture in a seafront park for years, was ordered to be felled due to a reported “permanent decline” following a March inspection by Hythe and Dibden council.
Following the tree’s removal, a six-foot stump was left behind. The council announced plans to replace it with a salt-tolerant, flood-resistant Ulmus tree as part of the “New Horizon” project. However, some locals are unimpressed, with one resident likening the situation to the Sycamore Gap controversy of 2023.
Garry Brown, a distressed resident, lamented the loss, stating that the tree’s absence has altered the landscape significantly. Another resident, Tony Elliott, expressed sadness over the tree’s removal, noting its importance in providing a scenic break in the otherwise plain horizon.
Parish councillor Mark Clark emphasized that the decision was made with careful consideration, based on advice from independent professionals confirming the tree’s irreversible decline. He clarified that the council followed proper procedures and acted out of concern for public safety and the community’s well-being.
Clark highlighted the distinction between the Hythe tree removal and the Sycamore Gap incident, stating that the former was a necessary measure to ensure safety and enhance the area’s future. The remaining stump is set to be transformed into a community sculpture in collaboration with local artists.
Another council member, Alex Wade, acknowledged the sentimental value of the tree to the community but supported the decision as a crucial one for the area’s development.
