A video shared on social media captures the harrowing moment when hikers frantically flee as a volcano erupts beneath them.
The video depicts a group of hikers mere meters away from the volcano’s crater in Santiaguito, Guatemala during its recent eruption. The eruption sent a massive cloud of ash into the air while rocks and debris were ejected.
Another video from a distance shows some hikers descending the hillside while rocks fall around them. One hiker can be seen stumbling as the group hurriedly moves away.
According to the Sun, the hikers were tackling a trail known as “the death trail”.
The climb is notoriously perilous, as the volcano is amongst the most active in Central America.
Authorities have prohibited the ascent of the Santiaguito volcano.
ABC7 Eyewitness News mentioned that hikers frequently disregard the restrictions.
Users on platform X expressed their reactions to the incident.
One X user commented: “This is a reminder to steer clear of active craters. Put yourself in their situation… what would you do first?”
Another individual stated: “Volcanoes don’t send warnings. One moment you’re taking photos, the next you’re dodging hot rocks’.
