The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, emphasized that America did not initiate the current conflict with Iran. Hegseth suggested the possibility of deploying US troops in Iran while highlighting Tehran’s military buildup to protect its nuclear program. He stated that the Trump administration was committed to concluding the conflict.
Hegseth described Iran’s development of advanced missiles and drones as a means to fortify its nuclear ambitions and expressed determination to defeat the Iranian government. He made these remarks following the death of a fourth US soldier in Kuwait due to Iranian attacks.
Sending a strong message to Tehran, Hegseth warned that any harm or threat to Americans would result in swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. He clarified that the primary goal of the US operation was to eliminate the missile threat and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, rather than seeking regime change.
Hegseth also hinted at the potential deployment of ground troops but dismissed comparisons with the prolonged Iraq conflict. He stressed the need for strategic planning to achieve objectives that align with American interests without revealing specific details to the enemy.
The Defense Secretary underscored the mission’s focus on neutralizing Iran’s offensive capabilities, including missiles and naval assets, to prevent them from obtaining nuclear weapons. He emphasized that the operation’s duration was flexible and dependent on President Trump’s directives, avoiding setting a fixed timetable for completion.
General Dan Caine, the Chair of the Joint Chiefs, cautioned that the military campaign against Iran would be a protracted and challenging endeavor, requiring time and effort to accomplish the designated objectives while minimizing US casualties.
