After operating for more than a century, a historic grocery store is set to close its doors. Winn-Dixie, a well-known regional grocery brand in the United States, is undergoing significant changes that involve shutting down some of its stores.
The latest store in the chain to cease operations is located at Garden Park Plaza, 8924 N. Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens. While the exact closing date has not been confirmed, it is expected to occur around mid-April.
Winn-Dixie explained in a statement that the decision to close the store is part of a transformation process aimed at ensuring the company’s future success. The company reassured employees at the affected store that they will have the opportunity to apply for positions at nearby locations.
Although Winn-Dixie maintains a strong presence in Florida with approximately 327 stores in the area, the Garden Park Plaza store is the sole location in that specific region, with the nearest alternative store being more than 10 miles away.
This closure follows Aldi’s acquisition of Southeastern Grocers in 2024, which included 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets branches. Subsequently, the then-CEO of Southeastern, Anthony Hucker, in partnership with investors, repurchased 170 Winn-Dixie stores from Aldi.
Established in 1925 in Miami, the Winn-Dixie chain now operates around 360 stores across five states in the US. The closure of the Palm Beach Gardens store is seen as a precursor to broader changes in the grocery industry, driven largely by competition from non-traditional retailers.
