A honeymooning tourist in the Maldives is in critical condition following a shark attack that resulted in severe blood loss and the amputation of his leg. The victim, identified as Borja, a Spanish gynaecologist from Alicante, had recently married Ana before traveling to the Maldives for their first vacation as a married couple.
The incident occurred off Kooddoo, an island in the Gaafu Alif Atoll, known for its high shark activity. Reports suggest that the shark attack took place near the Kooddoo fish processing plant, where the victim was part of a group that entered the water.
After the attack, Borja was first taken to Ga. Atoll Hospital and later airlifted to Male, the capital of the Maldives, for further treatment at ADK Hospital. It is believed that the sharks in the area may have been more aggressive due to the lack of fish waste dumping in recent days.
A formal complaint has been filed against the company that organized the group excursion for alleged negligence. Ana’s relatives, including her family from Castellon, have traveled to the Maldives to support her during this difficult time. Borja remains in intensive care, with precarious medical conditions.
Kooddoo, where the incident took place, is home to the Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort, a popular honeymoon destination.
