Hotel Expert Advises Against Using Kettle Due to Unhygienic Practices

Whether you are staying at a luxurious hotel or a more budget-friendly accommodation, an expert in hotel etiquette has shed light on why it’s best to steer clear of using the room kettle – and the reason is quite disturbing.

While there are several dos and don’ts when it comes to staying at a hotel, including inspecting the room for cleanliness, adjusting the shower temperature, and tidying up the space, etiquette expert William Hanson has specifically cautioned against using the kettle in hotel rooms. According to Hanson, people often misuse the kettle by treating it like a mini washing machine for small items.

A study by Hotels.com revealed that 23% of Brits have resorted to washing their undergarments in the hotel kettle, prompting concerns about hygiene practices. Hanson, who has extensive experience staying in hotels worldwide, emphasized that using the kettle for such purposes is not effective and should be avoided at all costs.

In response to the bizarre practice of washing underwear in kettles, Hanson recommended utilizing hotel laundry services or purchasing new undergarments instead. He highlighted that there are far better alternatives than resorting to using the kettle inappropriately.

Additionally, Hanson shared stories of guests misusing kettles by cooking noodles directly in them, emphasizing that while it’s acceptable to use the kettle for food preparation, it should not be used in this manner. For those who must use the kettle, Hanson advised boiling it empty first to remove any potential limescale or impurities.

Apart from kettle misuse, hotel etiquette is equally crucial. Research from Hotels.com indicated that a significant portion of Brits admit to lapses in hotel manners, such as being impolite to staff, creating noise late at night, or leaving their rooms untidy. Improving hotel etiquette not only benefits others but also enhances the guest’s overall experience.

To assist guests in refining their hotel behavior, Hanson developed a comprehensive hotel etiquette guide with Hotels.com. The guide emphasizes that small acts of consideration can lead to significant rewards, including better service, improved sleep quality, and potential savings on future trips.
