“Husband Accused of Double Murder After Affair with Au Pair”

Date:

A man who is a husband and father has been accused of killing his wife and a stranger at his residence a year following an extramarital affair with the family’s au pair. Brendan Banfield, aged 39, faces charges of aggravated murder in relation to the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, aged 37, and Joseph Ryan, aged 38, in northern Virginia, USA. Banfield had been romantically involved with Juliana Peres Magalhaes, a 25-year-old au pair from Brazil, who was present when the two victims were fatally injured by stabbing and gunfire, respectively.

According to court documents, prosecutors allege that Banfield and Magalhaes conspired to orchestrate a complex plan to implicate another individual in the stabbing death of Banfield’s wife. The couple, along with the wife and Ryan, were together on the day of the incident in the main bedroom of the Banfield residence. Banfield and Magalhaes initially reported to authorities that Ryan, a stranger, had attacked the wife upon entering the house, leading to both of them shooting him in self-defense.

However, prosecutors contend that Banfield and Magalhaes deliberately lured Ryan to the residence and staged the scene to make it appear as though they had acted in defense against an intruder. The two had been engaged in a romantic relationship since the year preceding the killings. Both Banfield and the au pair were arrested between 2023 and 2024 and initially charged with murder. In 2024, Magalhaes pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter after confirming certain aspects of the prosecution’s narrative in a statement to authorities.

Magalhaes disclosed in her statement that she and Brendan Banfield had set up a social media account in his wife’s name catering to individuals interested in peculiar sexual practices. Reportedly, Ryan engaged with the account under Christine Banfield’s identity, leading to plans for a meeting on the morning of February 24, 2023, involving a knife during a sexual encounter. Prosecutor Eric Clingan indicated that Magalhaes’ statement significantly bolstered the state’s case ahead of the trial.

Clingan remarked, “With 12 different homicide detectives, there were 24 different theories. Now, one theory.” Nevertheless, not all investigators involved in the case subscribed to the belief that Banfield and Magalhaes deceived Ryan.

Former digital forensic examiner Brendan Miller from the Fairfax County Police Department testified that extensive analysis of electronic devices indicated Christine Banfield had directly corresponded with Ryan via the social platform. An evidence review team at the University of Alabama corroborated Miller’s digital forensic findings.

Despite claims that Miller’s reassignment from the digital forensics unit in late 2024 was unrelated to disciplinary actions, Banfield’s attorney, John Carroll, argued that the transfer was linked to the case. Carroll also contended during court proceedings that the lead detective in the case was reassigned subsequent to challenging the higher-ups’ catfishing hypothesis.

In addition to facing aggravated murder charges, Banfield, who had his daughter present at the residence during the killings, is accused of child abuse and felony child cruelty in connection to the incident. He maintains his innocence regarding these allegations, which will also be addressed during the upcoming trial.
