Following a violent attack in a prison workshop, Ian Huntley, a notorious child killer, was assaulted by another inmate using a metal pole, as reported by the police. The 52-year-old was swiftly taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for emergency treatment after prison staff discovered him lying unconscious in a pool of blood at HMP Frankland.
The suspected assailant, identified as triple killer Anthony Russell, left Huntley with severe head injuries and a slim 5% chance of survival. Huntley was promptly placed in a medically induced coma and airlifted to the hospital. Despite the grim prognosis, Huntley continues to battle for his life in the hospital.
Anthony Russell, who is serving a whole-life prison sentence for the murder of Julie Williams, her son David Williams, and the rape and murder of Nicole McGregor, is now linked to this brutal assault on Huntley. In contrast, Huntley is serving a life sentence for the notorious murders of schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, with no possibility of parole until 2042.
Police investigations have identified a male prisoner in his mid-40s as the suspect behind the attack. The Durham Constabulary spokesperson confirmed that the injured prisoner, Huntley, remains in a serious condition as forensic teams continue to gather evidence from the workshop where the assault took place. The suspect has not been arrested yet but is under detention within the prison facility.
