“Innocent Man Wrongly Accused by Facial Recognition Tech”

Date:

A man was wrongly accused of stealing goods from an IKEA store in London due to a misidentification by facial recognition technology. Colin McMahon, a 59-year-old father of two, was taken into custody by the police in Greenwich on October 16, 2025, based on a Retrospective Facial Recognition (RFR) search that linked him to a theft incident on February 4. After spending a day in custody and being charged with theft, Colin was later cleared of the accusations on February 26, 2026, by the City of London Magistrates’ Court.

Colin, a former roofer from Cricklewood, London, expressed his shock at being surrounded by police officers and accused of a crime he did not commit while walking down the street with a friend after a meeting with a homelessness charity. He criticized the use of facial recognition technology by the Metropolitan Police, stating that it could have serious consequences for individuals, especially those with mental health issues.

Although police initially noted similarities between Colin and the suspect captured on CCTV, Colin pointed out differences in physical appearance and mannerisms. Despite being acquitted after a trial, Colin remains distressed by the ordeal and is undergoing therapy to cope with the trauma. He emphasized the need for compensation and expressed concerns about being mistakenly arrested again.

The Metropolitan Police acknowledged the impact of such investigations on individuals and clarified that RFR is used for generating intelligence leads, requiring human review and further investigation before any conclusions are drawn. Updates to the RFR policy framework were implemented in March 2026 to ensure the technology is used effectively while safeguarding people’s rights and privacy.

Colin’s experience sheds light on the challenges and implications of using facial recognition technology in law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of ensuring accuracy and protecting individuals’ rights.
