The inquest into the death of former Sheffield United player, Maddy Cusack, revealed that her coach engaged in psychological tactics with her before her passing. Cusack, aged 27, was discovered unconscious by her father at their residence in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023, and tragically passed away later the same day. Reports from the inquest indicated that she had concerns about facing discrimination and mockery within the club.
During the proceedings at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court, it was disclosed that coach Jonathan Morgan had made remarks about Cusack’s weight while overseeing Sheffield United Women. Cusack’s partner, Grace Riglar, testified that Cusack felt immense pressure when Morgan joined the team, interpreting his actions as personal attacks when she lost her regular starting position despite previously being a key player.
Riglar shared with the inquest that Cusack had expressed anxiety about Morgan’s arrival at Sheffield United due to their prior interactions at Leicester City. She recounted Cusack’s discomfort with Morgan’s comments about her weight, which led Cusack to alter her diet and exercise routines significantly.
Furthermore, the inquest heard how Morgan’s behavior extended to inappropriate references to personal relationships within the team, causing discomfort to Cusack. She had confided in Riglar about her desire to transition to a new career as a flight attendant in Dubai, indicating her reluctance to continue playing football.
Testimonies from Cusack’s colleagues, including her marketing department supervisor Eoin Doyle, suggested a change in her demeanor upon Morgan’s appointment. Doyle noted Cusack’s unusual apprehension and anxiety during that period, contrasting with her usual confident demeanor. Additionally, Morgan’s comments regarding Cusack as “love sick” raised concerns among colleagues, though Doyle did not perceive it as malicious.
