“Internship Rejection Frustrates Aspiring Binman”

Date:

A young man expressed disappointment after being turned down three times for a binman position at the council, despite completing a nine-month unpaid internship. Bryan Rowe, 21, shared that he had applied twice to Southampton City Council and was mistakenly rejected initially. Following an interview, he was once again denied the job opportunity. Rowe, who has ADHD and myotonic dystrophy, a type of muscular dystrophy, had served as a lorry loader during his internship. Despite being encouraged to apply for roles post-internship, he faced repeated rejections.

The council acknowledged an error in the second rejection email, attributing it to incorrect information being sent out. Rowe, described as consistently enthusiastic and competent during his internship, had harbored a desire to work as a binman since childhood. His mother, Claire Rowe, criticized the council’s decision as harsh and unjust, suggesting they should have straightforwardly declined the application if deemed unsuitable.

Claire Rowe emphasized the emotional toll on her son, expressing disappointment in how the situation unfolded. She highlighted the importance of work for disabled individuals in fostering confidence and independence. The council declined to comment on individual applications but asserted adherence to recruitment protocols, extending well wishes to unsuccessful candidates.

Following the initial rejections, Rowe conveyed his feelings of inadequacy to his mother, reflecting on his perceived lack of worthiness for employment. Claire Rowe questioned the system’s reliance on experience, especially considering her son’s dedicated unpaid service.

She lodged a formal complaint with the council, prompting a review of their recruitment practices. The family’s ordeal underscored the challenges faced by individuals seeking employment opportunities, particularly those with disabilities, in navigating the hiring process.
