Iran’s objectives towards the UK have been outlined following an arson attack on ambulances owned by a Jewish charity in Golders Green, allegedly carried out by a Tehran-aligned terrorist group. Authorities have apprehended two suspects linked to the incident, which was claimed by the Iran-affiliated Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. While investigations are ongoing, the incident is being treated as a potential antisemitic hate crime rather than a terrorist act.
Security expert Professor Anthony Glees has highlighted three goals that the Iranian regime may have concerning the UK, amidst escalating threats toward the West. These objectives include deterring the UK government from deeper involvement in the conflict with Iran, instilling fear among British Jews to rally support within Iran and the wider Middle East, and identifying vulnerabilities for potential attacks.
Although it is premature to directly attribute the attack to Iran, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley expressed concerns over the increasing threats posed by the Iranian state. The Israel Defence Forces have warned of Iran’s missile capabilities, capable of reaching major European cities like London, Berlin, and Paris. Recent missile launches towards the UK-US Diego Garcia military base have raised alarms, emphasizing the global threat posed by the Iranian regime.
Professor Glees emphasized the urgent need for assessment by military intelligence experts to address potential threats from Iran, including cyberattacks on critical national infrastructure. He stressed the gravity of the situation, especially following recent conflicts in the Middle East, and the need for heightened vigilance against possible Iranian aggression.
