The sibling of a prominent Irish athlete has been fatally shot in broad daylight on a bustling street in Barcelona.

The individual, aged 36, was gunned down on Thursday morning along Carrer de Balmes in the heart of Barcelona, near a National Police facility.

Hailing from Dublin’s north inner city, he succumbed to a head gunshot wound, as per reports from local news source ElCaso.cat, while the assailant managed to flee the scene after the attack.

The incident took place on a busy central street in front of the National Police’s DNI office, responsible for issuing national ID cards and passports, according to the same source.

Forensic specialists set up a tent at the location to gather evidence, while investigators worked on identifying the suspect. Surveillance footage has been made public, and the suspected weapon used in the crime has been recovered.

A local resident residing near the deceased man’s parents in Dublin shared with the Irish Times that they are highly esteemed in the community. The older brother, who brought pride to the nation through sports, is also well-regarded.
