“Metropolitan Police and Apple Team Up to Combat Phone Theft”

Date:

Tech companies are under pressure from the Metropolitan Police to enhance security measures on stolen phones or risk government intervention. This ultimatum was issued alongside a new collaboration between the police force and Apple to disrupt criminal networks involved in phone theft and decrease the value of stolen devices in the hands of criminals. By sharing intelligence on stolen phones, the partnership aims to track the movement of these devices and prevent their reactivation.

The Metropolitan Police’s initiative follows a sustained effort to combat phone theft, which is increasingly seen as a profitable international criminal activity. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley emphasized the importance of preventing stolen phones from being reused or resold, highlighting the impact of rendering stolen phones inoperable on reducing their attractiveness to criminals. This approach is intended to raise the stakes for offenders and diminish the rewards associated with phone theft.

Recent successes include the dismantling of a major mobile phone smuggling network that trafficked thousands of stolen devices to China. Additionally, a crackdown on phone theft in Westminster led to a significant drop in incidents, with hundreds of arrests and the recovery of numerous stolen phones. The Metropolitan Police stressed the need for ongoing efforts and urged the government to enforce regulations requiring phone companies to disclose data on stolen devices and reactivations.

Furthermore, the police force called for the implementation of legislation mandating minimum technical standards to ensure stolen phones in the UK are rendered unusable if industry initiatives prove insufficient. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan emphasized the importance of collective action from the mobile phone industry to prevent stolen phones from being utilized or sold domestically and internationally.
