Cops have cleared a section of Hamburg Airport in response to a “police situation,” leading to the evacuation of the area. The airport operator has announced a temporary cancellation of all departures while emergency services address the incident.
Passengers beyond the security checks in the airside section of the airport were required to vacate, including those already onboard planes who had to deplane. According to German news outlet Bild, chaos has ensued at the airport with loudspeaker announcements informing terminal passengers that departures are currently not possible.
A spokesperson for the German Federal Police confirmed an ongoing investigation in the security area, although the duration of the closure remains uncertain. Local media reports indicate flight delays of up to three hours being displayed on information boards.
Authorities have conducted searches in a lounge at the airport, with customs officers participating in the operation. Fire crews are on standby at Terminal 1 and Airport Plaza as part of the large-scale response.
