“Islamophobe Sentenced to Life for Sikh Woman’s Rape”

Date:

An individual labeled as an “Islamophobe” and deemed a significant threat to women has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and religiously motivated mistreatment of a Sikh woman. John Ashby, aged 32, stalked the victim from a bus and forcibly entered her residence in Walsall, West Midlands, using a stick in an incident last October. Engaging in a distressing attack, he directed a series of Islamophobic insults at the woman under the mistaken belief that she was Muslim.

In the sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, Mr. Justice Pepperall characterized Ashby as a “deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe” and emphasized the extreme danger he poses to the public, especially women. Ashby, with no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to charges including rape, robbery, intentional strangulation, and religiously aggravated assault during his trial.

The court was informed by Prosecutor Phil Bradley KC that despite the victim’s protests, Ashby demanded she undress, struck her with the stick, choked her, and instructed her to get into the bathtub, all while subjecting her to racial and religious abuse. Police bodycam footage capturing the victim’s distress was described as “disturbing,” with witnesses recounting her screams following the assault.

In a recorded interview presented in court, the victim recounted the harrowing experience of being confronted by Ashby in her home, where he verbally abused her, mistaking her religious affiliation. The assault abruptly ended when Ashby fled upon hearing a noise outside, taking the victim’s belongings with him.

The victim shared in a statement how the attack had violated her sense of security in her own home, leading to panic attacks and a significant decline in her mental well-being. She expressed her profound distress over the impact on her life, revealing that she and her partner had plans to marry but now face a disrupted future.

Acknowledging the victim’s courage, the judge commended her bravery and expressed hope for her and her partner’s recovery following the traumatic incident. Senior Crown Prosecutor Rav Dhillon described the assault as a disturbing act fueled by religious animosity and reiterated that such violence against an innocent individual in their own home is unacceptable.

Dabinderjit Singh OBE, a senior executive at the Sikh Federation (UK), praised the court’s decision to hand down a life sentence to Ashby, underscoring the severity of the racial aspect of the attack. The sentencing sends a strong message to perpetrators of violent racist acts, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice in such cases.
