Northern Ireland Woman Accused of Embezzling £850K from Australian Philanthropist

Date:

A woman hailing from Northern Ireland has been apprehended on charges of siphoning off over £850,000 from Australian magnate Judith Neilson. Annalouise Spence, 51, residing in County Antrim, served as the private secretary to the billionaire philanthropist. She was denied bail on May 8 in Sydney after facing multiple allegations of unauthorized financial dealings with Neilson’s assets over several years.

Reportedly, as per The Irish Times, Spence is accused of using the embezzled money to host her 50th birthday bash at a high-end hotel in Sydney, attended by Neilson herself. The funds were allegedly spent on lavish items like custom napkins, designer shoes, and an elegant gown. Additionally, Spence is said to have splurged tens of thousands on trips to the United States, personalized diamond and gold jewelry, high-fashion items, fine art, chauffeured rides, premium bedding accessories, and Cartier jewelry pieces.

Having worked as Neilson’s personal secretary for eight years, Spence’s alleged misconduct came to light when another staff member, while reconciling Neilson’s finances, discovered a charge of AUS$59,000 (£43,000) for a pink-gold Rolex watch bought from a London dealer, as reported by Belfast Live.

Judith Neilson, a prominent figure on Australia’s affluent list with a net worth of nearly $1.5 billion, founded the Judith Neilson Institute eight years ago with a $100 million endowment to promote journalism and storytelling in Australia.
