“Israel and Lebanon Extend Ceasefire by 45 Days”

Date:

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire for 45 days following recent discussions, as confirmed by the US State Department. The extension comes after two days of productive talks and will be followed by further negotiations scheduled for June 2–3, according to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott. The existing fragile truce between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon was originally set to expire on Sunday.

Pigott expressed hope that these ongoing discussions would contribute to establishing a lasting peace between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of recognizing each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while ensuring genuine security along their shared border.

The initial truce was announced by Donald Trump on April 16, but incidents of fire exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah have persisted since then. Recently, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals, including eight children, in the southern region.

The State Department announced plans to resume the political negotiations in June, as tensions remain high in the region, risking a resurgence of conflict and exacerbating the global energy crisis stemming from the conflict. The ongoing stalemate in talks between Iran and the US has added to the uncertainty, with Iran maintaining control over the critical shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for a significant portion of the world’s oil supply. Meanwhile, the US has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports.

In related developments, Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In Washington, the US State Department disclosed that a second day of talks between Israel and Lebanon was underway, with a primary objective of extending the fragile ceasefire set to expire soon. Despite efforts to maintain peace, both sides have continued to engage in hostilities.

The Israeli military reported targeting Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon in response to hostile activities, leading to nearly 40 injuries near Tyre. One strike notably damaged a primary health center and caused harm to medical staff at the nearby Hiram Hospital.
