“Israel Nears Death Penalty Law for Palestinian Prisoners”

Date:

Israel is on the verge of implementing a law that would introduce the death penalty for certain Palestinian prisoners, sparking concerns from human rights organizations. Amnesty International has labeled this move as part of Israel’s long-standing efforts to eradicate Palestinians, denouncing it as a form of apartheid enforced through capital punishment and accusing Israeli authorities of widespread torture of Palestinian detainees.

The proposed legislation, set for its final vote in the Knesset next week, targets individuals convicted of terrorist acts leading to the death of Israelis. The bill specifies that those who intentionally cause harm to Israeli citizens or residents with the aim of negating Israel’s existence could face either death by hanging or life imprisonment within 90 days of sentencing.

Support for the death penalty bill has come from Itamar Ben-Gvir, an ally of Benjamin Netanyahu known for his extreme views. Reports indicate that Israel has started training and logistical preparations for potential executions, with around 10,000 Palestinians currently held in Israeli prisons as of April 2025. The bill, introduced by MP Limor Son Har-Melech, removes the requirement for unanimous verdicts to impose the death penalty on prisoners.

Prisoners sentenced to death under the proposed law would be restricted from seeking clemency and isolated from visitors except authorized personnel. The European Union has strongly criticized the bill, with its foreign affairs spokesperson highlighting concerns over the violation of human rights posed by capital punishment, emphasizing the irreversible nature of judicial errors and the lack of proven deterrence.

While the EU and other international bodies oppose capital punishment, supporters of the bill like Ben-Gvir have lauded its progress, hailing it as a significant development for Israel’s security and justice. Despite these contrasting views, the potential approval of the death penalty legislation represents a substantial shift in Israel’s approach, raising alarm bells among human rights advocates and global observers.
