Keir Starmer has issued a caution that western nations are confronting a “dual-front war” as he engaged with key allies at a significant defense summit.
The Prime Minister, present at the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit, emphasized the importance for countries to remain vigilant about the threat posed by Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Iran. This announcement followed his authorization for British forces to initiate the seizure of Russian shadow fleet tankers upon his arrival in Helsinki, Finland, for the JEF discussions.
The JEF, consisting of a military alliance of 10 northern European nations led by the UK, is focused on safeguarding against Russian encroachments. Addressing the assembly at Helsinki’s presidential palace, the Prime Minister remarked, “The menace from Russia in the northern and eastern regions has not diminished. In fact, I believe that menace has escalated.”
During interviews with media outlets at the outset of the summit, Mr. Starmer remarked, “The primary focus here is on Russian aggressions in Ukraine, and we must acknowledge that there exists a conflict on two fronts – encompassing the Iranian crisis and the ongoing Ukrainian turmoil. Today, I will engage in discussions with allies about additional measures we can undertake. These deliberations will encompass defense expenditures and capabilities.”
In a post on X, the PM also expressed concerns that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin was capitalizing on the Middle East conflict to exploit higher oil prices for personal gain. He affirmed, “I am committed to safeguarding British interests both domestically and internationally, hence our current actions against Russia’s shadow fleet.”
Earlier, UK Defense Secretary John Healey stressed that military officials do not perceive any immediate threat from Tehran to target the UK subsequent to the recent missile strikes on the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia island in the Indian Ocean.
When pressed on Sky News regarding Iran’s capability to launch missile attacks on London, he responded, “We have not assessed any plans by Iran to strike London.”
Further elaborating on Iran’s capabilities, he reassured, “Our assessment does not indicate any intentions from Iran to launch an attack. Nevertheless, we possess the necessary resources and alliances to defend Britain, in collaboration with NATO.”
He added, “Regarding Iran, they are showcasing the ability to strike across the Middle East, utilizing similar strategies and technologies observed in Russia’s actions in Ukraine, thus implying Putin’s involvement in both conflicts.”
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UK, Warren Stephens, cautioned against canceling the planned visit of the King to America next month amid the recent US-Israeli strikes on Tehran. Despite calls for postponement, Mr. Stephens emphasized the significance of the royal visit, stating that it would be a substantial error to cancel.
While the royal visit has not been officially confirmed, Mr. Stephens suggested that the King is likely to proceed with the trip, which he believes will hold substantial importance. Additionally, he mentioned that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, extended an invitation for Charles to address both Houses of Congress during his visit.
