“King Fondly Recalls Family Memories at Bermuda Garden Party”

Date:

The King expressed his admiration for his sister, the Princess Royal, during a speech at a garden party in Bermuda, reminiscing about their family’s past travels on the Royal Yacht Britannia. He fondly recalled a childhood memory of reuniting with his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, after their Commonwealth trip that included Bermuda.

Staying at the recently refurbished Government House, the King joked with guests about the lingering scent of fresh paint. At the garden party, he praised Bermuda as a valued member of the British family, highlighting its historical significance to his own family, especially as the first stop on his parents’ Coronation Tour in 1953.

Reflecting on the family’s use of the Royal Yacht Britannia to meet his parents in North Africa, the King humorously mentioned his inability to keep up with his well-traveled sister, the Princess Royal. He expressed gratitude for the invitation to Bermuda, noting the historical significance of being the islands’ first reigning King to visit in four centuries.

After engaging with a diverse range of guests, including local politicians, community leaders, and artists, the King enjoyed canapes and ‘dark and stormy’ cocktails at the picturesque garden party. The event featured music by the Bermuda Philharmonic orchestra, creating a delightful ambiance for the King and his guests.
