An auction three years ago saw Freddie Mercury’s iconic stage outfits and personal belongings fetching £40 million, leaving Queen fans worried about their future display. However, a year-long exhibition starting this weekend will resurrect the flamboyant frontman’s world, showcasing 1,000 items ranging from stage costumes to song lyrics, including his cherished teasmade.
Peter Freestone, Freddie’s personal assistant, collaborated with Queen enthusiast Tomas Hykel to track down items auctioned at Sotheby’s in London in 2023. The exhibit aims to bring together the essence of the Freddie they knew for a year.
Freddie’s possessions, auctioned by his beneficiary and former fiancée Mary Austin, marked the end of an era as she decided to part with his estate and the contents of Garden Lodge in Kensington, west London. Despite their romantic relationship ending in the 1970s, Freddie and Mary remained bonded.
Notable sales included Freddie’s Yamaha grand piano for £1.7 million and the Bohemian Rhapsody lyrics for £1.3 million. Many items have now been reacquired or lent for The World of Freddie exhibition at The House of Music Hungary in Budapest, commemorating Queen’s performance in the city in July 1986.
Peter, a close friend of Freddie, expressed hope that fans would embrace the exhibition, featuring over 1,000 carefully curated items obtained through various means. The display includes iconic pieces like Freddie’s sneakers, video jackets, and even personal hobbies, promising an immersive experience.
The exhibition also delves into Freddie’s sensory preferences, presenting his cologne choices and favorite snacks like Quality Street chocolates. Peter, reflecting on their shared memories and Freddie’s generosity, shared anecdotes of Freddie’s thoughtful gestures, emphasizing his aim to bring joy to others.
The exhibition’s launch in Budapest was chosen due to scheduling constraints at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, with plans for a global tour post-closure. Peter reminisced about the Sotheby’s auction, highlighting the surprising prices paid by fans for sentimental items.
In essence, The World of Freddie serves as a tribute to Freddie’s legacy, encapsulating his essence through a diverse collection of personal items and memorabilia, promising an unforgettable experience for fans and visitors alike.
