Keir Starmer, along with Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham, displayed a united front today in preparation for the upcoming crucial local elections. Regarding speculation about his resignation in the event of heavy defeats, the Prime Minister asserted that he had a mandate until 2024 to enact change and was determined to fulfill that mandate. During the visit, Starmer was accompanied by Rayner and Burnham, the latter of whom was blocked by Labour’s executive committee from contesting a by-election in Gorton and Denton.
While the trio projected unity and shared light-hearted moments with schoolchildren, Rayner has recently been vocal in her criticisms of the government. Rayner, a potential future leadership candidate, expressed concerns last month that Labour was running out of time to bring about necessary changes.
Speaking at an event held by campaign group Mainstream, Rayner criticized the perception that Labour represents the establishment rather than working people. She also voiced opposition to the government’s immigration proposals led by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, highlighting the potential negative impact on individuals who have made significant investments in their lives and contributions to the economy.
Rayner emphasized that as a party, Labour cannot afford to remain passive in the face of decline and must demonstrate a commitment to delivering the desired changes. The urgency for tangible progress is clear, and the party must show that a Labour government is capable of fulfilling the expectations of the people.
