Labour Official Defends Mandelson as US Ambassador

Date:

A senior Labour official defended the decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States, deeming it a rational choice given Mandelson’s expertise in trade relations. Mandelson, who was dismissed by Keir Starmer last year, was accused of deceiving the Prime Minister and his team regarding his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In an interview with Times Radio, Cabinet minister Steve Reed disclosed that Mandelson had misled authorities by downplaying his connection to Epstein. Reed justified the appointment based on Mandelson’s prior roles as the EU Trade Commissioner and UK Trade Secretary, highlighting his qualifications for the position.

However, Reed echoed Starmer’s stance that had the full extent of Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein been known, he would not have been selected for the role. Housing Secretary, a supporter of Starmer, criticized Mandelson for deceiving everyone and emphasized that Starmer and his advisor were secure in their positions despite the controversy.

Reed expressed shock upon learning about Mandelson’s association with Epstein, as revealed in documents released by US authorities. Downing Street faced scrutiny over fresh revelations about Mandelson, prompting a backlash and calls for transparency in the handling of the situation.

Despite the turmoil, Reed affirmed confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership, attributing the issue to Mandelson’s deception. Mandelson, who has not publicly addressed the matter since the police investigation began, maintains his innocence, denying any criminal wrongdoing and pledging to cooperate with law enforcement.
