A father and son duo is embarking on a 400-day cycling journey around the globe, spanning more than 25 countries. Amid challenging terrains and breathtaking landscapes, one particular destination has left a lasting impression.
George, aged 57, and his 23-year-old son, Josh Kohler, hailing from Norfolk, have been on an extraordinary global cycling adventure for over a year. Their ambitious mission, dubbed ‘Pedal the Planet’, has taken them to awe-inspiring destinations across the world, traversing diverse landscapes from desolate deserts to rugged mountains and picturesque rice fields.
Commencing their journey from Norfolk on March 29 last year, the duo has covered thousands of miles, expecting to reach a total of 30,000 kilometers by the end of their expedition. Along the way, they have raised over £30,000 for charity. By the time they conclude their remarkable voyage next month, George and Josh will have spent nearly 400 days pedaling across the globe, conquering an astounding 180,000 meters of elevation – equivalent to scaling 20 Mount Everests.
Their remarkable feat is on course to secure three Guinness World Records titles: ‘Fastest father and son to circumnavigate the world on bicycles,’ ‘Furthest distance cycled by a father and son,’ and ‘Most countries cycled through by a father and son.’ As they approach the conclusion of their extraordinary odyssey, with only a few weeks remaining, George and Josh granted an exclusive interview to The Mirror following their leg in South America.
Pausing their cycling adventure in Rio, George, who runs his own chimney-sweeping business, reflected on the challenges they have faced, including hardships, pressure, and moments of despair. Despite the trials, they have persevered, supporting each other through highs and lows, forging a deep bond and respect. Meeting remarkable individuals, witnessing stunning landscapes, and experiencing the journey’s entirety have been immensely rewarding, making the impending conclusion both daunting and fulfilling.
Among the memorable experiences during their daily 7-8 hours of cycling were traversing the remote Nullarbor Plain in Australia and marveling at the grandeur of Iguazu Falls in South America. Waking up to a sky filled with hot-air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey, marked another unforgettable moment. However, their standout favorite destination turned out to be China, surprising them with its unique culture, captivating scenery, delectable cuisine, and warm hospitality.
Despite the incredible adventures, their global expedition has not been without challenges. Battling fierce headwinds, scorching temperatures, daunting mountain passes, and desolate roads, Brazil emerged as the most challenging terrain due to its rugged topography. Navigating South America posed additional difficulties, lacking cycling infrastructure and safety measures, leading to mentally and physically draining conditions, especially in the sweltering heat.
Australia also presented its own set of challenges, with vast stretches of barren desert and extreme conditions, testing their resolve. As they approach the culmination of their 400-day journey, Josh and George aim to set three Guinness World Records, the results of which will be disclosed upon completing their epic adventure. Having recently flown from Rio to Lisbon, they are now pedaling through Portugal, Spain, and France before returning to Norfolk on May 2.
As the end draws near, the duo reflects on the profound impact of their journey on their relationship, acknowledging the emotional rollercoaster of spending a year together on the road. Despite occasional clashes and challenges, the experience has strengthened their bond, fostering a deeper connection and mutual understanding.
