During a court hearing, it was revealed that a high-powered explosive device used to destroy a ULEZ camera in Sidcup, southeast London, had such immense force that it scattered shrapnel over 100 meters, reaching a child’s bedroom.
Kevin Rees, aged 63, stands accused of manufacturing and placing the bomb at Willersley Avenue on December 6, 2023. The Woolwich Crown Court was informed that the device, made from a metal cylinder and explosive powder, had the potential to cause significant harm to individuals in the vicinity.
The explosion not only affected nearby residences but also caused damage to a child’s bedroom by piercing its window and leaving debris inside.
According to prosecutor Simon Denison KC, Rees drove from his residence on Harcourt Avenue, as reported by London Now, and allegedly positioned the explosive at the camera location. Subsequently, he ignited the fuse before departing. The detonation, which occurred after Rees left, resulted in vibrations felt in neighboring homes.
Evidence presented in court revealed that the explosion propelled shrapnel across the area, hitting a parked van and penetrating the door of a passing car, narrowly avoiding harm to the occupant.
Despite the destructive force, a child’s bedroom located 28 meters away from the blast suffered damage, including the destruction of a blind and the presence of scattered debris. Fortunately, the room was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported from the incident.
One fragment from the camera was flung more than 100 meters away, causing damage to a residence on Shuttle Close. Denison emphasized that it was fortunate no injuries occurred due to the incident.
Denison highlighted that although no injuries resulted from the explosion, there was a significant risk of harm. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion that caused a strong reaction.
Forensic analysis identified traces of chemicals commonly found in “black powder” explosives, often used in fireworks, further supporting the case against Rees.
Additionally, materials related to homemade explosives were discovered at Rees’s residence, indicating his interest in such substances. These findings included aluminum powder and iron oxide, which when combined create a low-level explosive called thermite.
Police also found a document listing chemicals, dated back to June 2011, with markings indicating their potential use in homemade explosives.
Rees denies the charges against him, including causing an explosion that could endanger lives or property, as well as possession of a prohibited weapon. Denison informed the jury that the defendant refutes being responsible for the explosion.
The trial is ongoing.
