Residents of a remote valley are facing difficulties following a landslide that blocked the main road, leading to emergency vehicles having to take a longer route for hospital trips. The closure of the main road connecting Cwmyoy and Llanthony in Monmouthshire occurred after a riverbank collapse on January 30.
Due to the road closure, residents in Llanthony Valley are now reliant on a single alternative route, the Gospel Pass, which poses challenges due to slippery conditions, causing concerns among locals. Michelle Turner, a resident of Llanthony, expressed disappointment in the lack of communication and safety measures following the sudden isolation of the community.
Monmouthshire County Council explained that the closure was necessary to assess the damage caused by the initial landslip. With ongoing movement observed in early February, officials emphasized the potential danger to public safety.
The road closure has left residents feeling cut off and anxious, with reports indicating a critical situation in the valley. Emergency services have been significantly impacted, with ambulance and fire engine journeys lengthened to up to two hours to reach the hospital.
Residents highlighted the unsuitability of the alternative route, Capel Y Ffin, for daily transportation needs, leading to longer commutes and disruptions in essential services. The closure has also affected farmers, businesses, and daily life in the valley.
Despite the risks, some residents have resorted to crossing the landslide as a safer option compared to using the Gospel Pass. However, they emphasize the importance of avoiding unauthorized access through closed roads.
In response to concerns raised, Monmouthshire County Council assured ongoing efforts to address the situation, emphasizing public safety as a priority. The council is collaborating with various agencies to manage essential services and monitor the area until a sustainable solution is implemented. Residents will receive updates through the council’s website to stay informed about developments.
