A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Courtney Angus, who was on the verge of her 21st birthday celebration. Michael Doherty, 38, received a minimum term of 33 years from the judge at Leeds Crown Court after admitting to the crime.
Courtney’s body was found by police in July last year at Doherty’s residence in Norfolk Street. She had been assaulted, strangled, and subjected to severe injuries and apparent sexual assault. Shockingly, Doherty had even amputated a part of Courtney’s body and displayed it on his mantlepiece.
Prior to the murder, Doherty had expressed romantic interest in Courtney, threatening self-harm when she did not reciprocate. On the night of the incident, witnesses reported a distressed man near a local pub where Doherty’s phone had connected to nearby cell towers.
During the sentencing, it was revealed that Doherty had a history of violent offenses, including a previous rape conviction. The judge imposed a 33-year minimum term with the possibility of parole, emphasizing the devastating impact of Courtney’s death on her loved ones.
The court also heard that Doherty’s actions were sexually motivated, with evidence suggesting he attacked Courtney after being rejected by her. He had been living with Courtney for several days before the fatal assault, during which he exhibited concerning behavior and made disturbing statements.
Following Courtney’s tragic death, her family expressed profound grief over the loss of their vibrant daughter and sister, describing her as a kind-hearted music enthusiast. Doherty, in addition to the murder charge, pleaded guilty to multiple threats with a bladed article but denied other related charges.
The incident at Dewsbury town center, where Doherty was apprehended brandishing a knife and claiming to have a dead body in his house, led to his arrest. The family’s statement highlighted the irreplaceable loss caused by Courtney’s untimely death, leaving a permanent void in their lives.
