Liverpool School Faces Backlash Over Ban on Skirt Socks

Date:

Some parents are expressing dissatisfaction with a Liverpool school for prohibiting girls from wearing socks with skirts.

King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool in Dingle has revised its uniform policy to ensure a more uniform appearance throughout the school.

However, certain parents are disapproving of elements of the updated policy, notably the prohibition on girls wearing skirts from donning socks. The new regulation mandates the use of black tights or tailored school trousers instead. Additionally, girls are required to keep their hair tied back at all times.

On social media, one parent remarked, “Has anyone else’s children attend King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool? We’ve received an email stating that girls are no longer permitted to wear socks and must wear tights year-round. Why is this even a rule? So the only visible parts are their head and hands? Sorry, but this is unacceptable.”

Another parent stated, “This is ridiculous. My child won’t be wearing tights either; she’s detested them since she was young.”

Principal Scott Cordon of King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool defended the regulations, stating to the Liverpool Echo, “We are updating our uniform policy to promote a professional and consistent appearance across the school.”

He shared a statement from the school’s Student Parliament representatives, who mentioned being part of discussions on the academy’s uniform expectations.

The students expressed, “We acknowledge that for some, uniform rules may seem trivial, but they hold significance in establishing a professional learning environment where everyone feels united as a community.

“The modifications aim to clarify and standardize expectations for all students. For those opting for a skirt, the requirement now includes plain black tights.

“Students also have the choice of wearing tailored school trousers, allowing families to select the option that best suits them while adhering to the academy’s uniform standards. We believe this fosters a professional and consistent appearance across the school.”

The statement added, “The expectation for hair to be tied back during the school day is about professionalism and practicality. Tied-back hair helps maintain a tidy appearance and is crucial in practical lessons prioritizing health and safety.”

One student representative stated, “School uniforms should uphold professionalism at all times, and tights offer a more presentable look. Tying back hair is not only for professional reasons but also for health and safety considerations.”

Other representatives indicated that the changes “enhance a more professional appearance throughout the academy” and ensure students present themselves in a manner reflecting the values and standards of the school community.

The student statement continued, “As students, we desire the school day’s focus to be on learning, leadership, and achievement. Clear and consistent uniform expectations aid in reducing confusion, ensuring fairness, and enabling everyone to concentrate on what truly matters – succeeding in school and preparing for our futures.”

King’s Leadership Academy is affiliated with the Great Schools Trust and was recognized last year as one of the most improved schools in the country.
